A new 24-karat gold note in Dubai, celebrating the best of Dubai, has gone into circulation – but you can’t use it in shops.

The gold note is the idea of Dian Jewellery, Finmet DMCC and Valaurum and pays homage to the historic gold trade in Dubai.

Dubai is often nicknamed the “City of Gold” for the very busy Dubai Gold Souk which is one of the biggest gold markets in the world.

The note uses 0.1 grams of gold inside it and both looks and feels like a modern bank note. Its purpose is as a souvenir for residents and visitors to Dubai.

The note’s design showcases the Dubai skyline and landmarks with each note distinguished by a unique serial number.

The note, which comes with a commemorative cover, is priced at Dhs159 per piece and can be bought at Dian Jewellery and Shantilal Jewellers (SCS) in Dubai Gold Souk.

It is strictly a souvenir and not legal tender – meaning you can’t spend it in shops.

A thin layer of 24-karat gold is placed between polymer substrate – a common material in modern banknotes – which will protect the gold and make it everlasting.

Founder of Dian Jewellery, Rahul Sagar explained the process further: “What makes it unique is the fact that through this patented process, we’re able to capture real 24K gold in a flexible note, and the gold can actually be recovered.

“Upon a professional fire assay you can actually recover the 0.1g of 24K gold from the note. Whereas gold plated items or notes are dipped into a solution that has a very small content of gold and this gold fades off and can’t be recovered even if it is melted.”
