Ethiopia applies to join BRICS

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the country has submitted an application to join the BRICS mechanism.
Ministry spokesman Meles Alem told reporters that Ethiopia is a founding member of many multinational organizations such as the United Nations, the African Union and the Non-Aligned Movement.
“In light of the changes in the international situation and the shift in (international) forces, Ethiopia will work to become a member of other international bodies including BRICS in order to protect our national interests,” he said, adding that Ethiopia expects a positive response to its request and will follow up on the progress.
It is noteworthy that BRICS is an acronym for a cooperative mechanism that includes 5 emerging markets, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, South Africa took over the rotating presidency of BRICS from China on January 1, 2023.
