Restrictions on fuel exports from Russia, the world’s largest exporter of marine fuels after the United States, have pushed up global prices and forced some buyers to scramble for alternative sources of gasoline and diesel.
After the European Union banned Russian fuel imports because of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, Russia shifted exports of diesel and other fuels destined for Europe to Brazil, Turkey, several North and West African countries, and the Gulf states in the Middle East. The Gulf States, which have their own large refineries, have re-exported fuel.

CNOOC Limited has just unveiled a significant find! They’ve pinpointed the Shenfu deep coalbed methane, or CBM field, right in Yulin, Shaanxi Province. This discovery boosts China’s gas reserves by a whopping 100 billion cubic meters.
Shenfu, positioned on the eastern side of the expansive Ordos Basin, is more than just a gas field. It’s proof of how much we’re advancing in uncovering the secrets of deep coalbed methane formations.
Picture this: within this vast area, a specific well, dubbed SM2-33-CH1, has uncovered coal layers that are 16.5 meters thick, buried deep down at roughly 2,011 meters. That’s like placing two tall skyscrapers on top of each other and then going even deeper.
But Shenfu isn’t just about depth and discovery. Once the experts tweaked and optimized the extraction process, this well began showing its true potential. It’s now expected to pull out nearly 19,000 cubic meters of gas every single day. That’s a lot of energy, enough to power many homes and industries.

China’s top authorities have inspected and approved Shenfu. They’ve stamped it as the country’s leading, large-scale deep CBM find. It’s not just a feather in the cap for the researchers and experts but a monumental step forward for the nation’s energy sector.
But wait, there’s more. If Shenfu sounded impressive, remember, this follows CNOOC’s previous grand discovery in Linxing, Shanxi Province. Mr. Xu Changgui, from CNOOC, expressed excitement over the prospects this offers. He highlighted that Shenfu opens doors for more exploration in similar regions, aiding in boosting both reserves and production.
Mr. Zhou expressed great enthusiasm about this new find. He sees it as a game-changer for CNOOC. With this discovery, the company is looking at a bright future where it can significantly expand its gas production operations.
And we’re not talking small numbers here. The potential is massive, with the possibility of extracting up to one trillion cubic meters of gas. That’s a trillion with twelve zeros, which could fuel countless homes and industries for years.
But CNOOC isn’t just about finding new gas fields. The company stands firm on pushing the boundaries of exploration. They’re always on the move, searching for the next big thing, and ensuring they keep growing and delivering value. Their dedication to progress and consistent growth is evident in their actions and achievements.
You see, Yulin City’s Shenfu deep CBM field isn’t just another discovery; it’s a significant stride towards boosting national energy security. A quick lesson for our viewers: CBM, or coalbed methane, is essentially natural gas found within coal seams. When we talk about deep CBM, we’re looking at deposits found more than 1,500 meters below the surface.
And China? Well, it’s home to a remarkable stash of CBM. Believe it or not, resources buried up to 2,000 meters deep account for a staggering 30 trillion cubic meters!
A tidbit from CNOOC: Deep CBM, being deeper and more intricate than its shallower counterparts, poses unique challenges. As depths increase, so do the temperature and pressure, making its extraction quite the task.
Shenfu is located deep underground, with its main coal layer sitting around 2,000 meters below the surface. That’s deeper than most skyscrapers are tall. Within this depth, you can find layers of coal, with some being as thin as 6 meters and others stretching up to 23 meters in thickness.
This isn’t just ordinary coal; it’s packed with gas. For every big piece of coal that weighs a tonne, about 15 cubic meters of gas are trapped inside, ready to be extracted and used. To tap into this gas treasure, efforts have been underway for a while now. Over 100 wells have been drilled into this field, with the sole purpose of exploring and extracting the gas.

The hard work seems to be paying off. Some of these wells are proving to be quite efficient, producing as much as 26,000 cubic meters of gas in a single day. That’s enough gas to supply a lot of homes and businesses.
And if you’re thinking CNOOC just got lucky with Shenfu, think again. They have a history of finding such valuable spots. Before Shenfu, there was Linxing, another deep coalbed methane field.
Linxing, just like Shenfu, holds a large amount of gas, showing that CNOOC has expertise in spotting and developing these rich gas reservoirs. To echo CNOOC’s Xu Changgui, Shenfu’s unveiling sheds light on the vast potential nestled within the eastern fringe of the Ordos Basin, marking an exciting phase for unconventional oil and gas exploration.

Gold and silver continue to struggle as the rush for dollar liquidity heads towards a climax, with very weak megabank stocks exposing fatal flaws in the US banking system about to revealed in all their glory. Bank of America’s unrealized losses are now over $130 billion, but they will quickly become realized if and when depositors flee as spare dollars are no longer available.
Does the market think this is actually going to happen? Judging by BofA’s abysmal stock price, yes. After that, there’s only one thing left to do.
