This is not just limited to the DTCC, is how the whole financial system works in a strict legal sense. You don’t own #stocks, the broker owns it “on your behalf” You don’t own cash in a bank, the bank owns it and a deposit is simply the right against the bank to have it back. Thanks to this “legal” scheme financial institutions can re hypothecate assets, even multiple times, effectively unlocking an incredible leverage potential and when needed fabricating collateral.
