The European Union (EU) is stepping up its efforts to strengthen relations with Turkey, aiming to enhance trade ties by 2024. This move comes amid Turkey’s growing interest in BRICS, a group of emerging economies, due to its mounting frustration with the slow progress in EU accession talks.

Economically, Turkey’s membership in BRICS could bring significant benefits by opening new markets for its products and services. The bloc, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents approximately 40% of the world’s population and a substantial portion of global GDP. This vast market potential presents a ripe opportunity for Ankara to expand its trade footprint, particularly in the context of its long-term economic growth ambitions. Moreover, increased investment and technology transfers from BRICS countries, particularly China and Russia, could bolster Turkey’s technological capabilities and infrastructure development.

There is an additional geopolitical rationale behind Turkey’s desire to join BRICS. By aligning with this group, Ankara aims to balance its relations with Western countries and enhance its influence in a multipolar world order. This maneuvering can be seen as a strategic way for Turkey to strengthen its geopolitical standing without sacrificing its existing relationships with NATO and the EU.

Furthermore, BRICS is actively working towards reducing reliance on the US dollar by promoting local currency transactions and creating a new reserve currency. This endeavor aligns with Turkey’s interest in enhancing financial stability and decreasing vulnerability to currency fluctuations, rendering it an attractive proposition for Ankara.

Meanwhile, the EU is keen to attract Turkey by pushing to revive and modernize the customs union, with the goal of expanding cooperation in services, public procurement, and sustainable development. By addressing trade irritants and improving migration management, the EU aims to bolster its relationship with Turkey.

Despite these incentives, Turkey has maintained its interest in joining BRICS, reflecting its broader foreign policy goals of diversifying economic relations and strengthening partnerships with non-Western powers. Aligning with BRICS is a testament to Ankara’s desire to expand its influence beyond traditional Western alliances and establish itself as a formidable player in global governance. This realignment could potentially herald a significant shift in economic and geopolitical alignments and signal Turkey’s ambitions to become a more prominent player on the international stage.
