You want to know what prices were from the 1940’s and as the changes come out for us going back to 1955 prices you can see here.
With this video Abbott & Costello show what it may have cost in the 1940’s as what a room costs and in the other portion of what someone can be paid.
Abbott & Costello 2 Classic Bits $28 and Loafing

These are two skits put into one video where in the first part they are to pay $7 a week for a room for 13 weeks, thus $1 a day, and in the second part you can see what the room looks like as a studio apartment, and in other videos I have seen it is without a kitchen and one bed as seen here. Today just renting a room may only be as low as $600 per month, or $20 a day, so from then it is now a 1,900 % increase.
In the second part Abbott gets a union job for $1.50 per hour as a loafer, and you can get laughs in both of these. Today some union jobs may pay $30 per hour, so from then it is now a 1,900 % increase.
You can see how much inflation has come since the 1940’s yet it has come up some till 1955. But maybe their numbers may be off a bit to get the joke out there.
