The financial world is bracing for the final phase of Basel III, dubbed the “endgame.” Touted as a measure to strengthen global banking regulations and prevent another financial meltdown, a closer look reveals a potentially more profound shift in the global monetary landscape. Is Basel III merely about stabilizing banks, or is it laying the groundwork for a return to a gold-centered financial system?

Following the devastating 2008 financial crisis, global regulators sought to bolster the resilience of the banking sector. The result was Basel III, a set of international regulatory accords designed to improve risk management, increase capital requirements, and promote greater transparency within banks.

The “endgame” component of Basel III, slated for full implementation by 2025, focuses on further refining risk-weighted assets and internal models used by banks to calculate their capital needs. The goal is to standardize risk assessment and prevent banks from artificially lowering their capital requirements through overly optimistic models.

While Basel III’s stated objective is bank stability, some analysts believe it may be a crucial step towards reintroducing gold into the global financial system. This theory hinges on how Basel III treats physical gold held by banks.

Under Basel III, physical gold held as allocated gold (meaning it is stored separately and identifiable as belonging to the bank) is classified as a zero-risk asset. This means banks don’t need to hold any capital against it, incentivizing them to increase their gold holdings.

This classification contrasts sharply with unallocated gold (gold held in a pool with other investors), which carries a higher risk weighting. The implication is clear: Basel III subtly encourages banks to hold physical gold, effectively treating it as a stable and reliable asset.

Whether intentionally or not, Basel III’s endgame is setting the stage for a potential transformation in the global financial landscape. As gold creeps back towards the center of the monetary system, the future of money could be on the verge of a historic shift. While the road ahead is uncertain, one thing is clear: the rules of the game are changing, and the world needs to understand the potential implications of Basel III’s endgame.
