Beijing has responded forcefully to the latest round of US tariffs, vowing to fight the trade war “to the bitter end” and announcing retaliatory tariffs on a range of American imports. This escalation comes after the US implemented its own new tariffs on Chinese goods, further intensifying the already strained economic relationship between the two global powers.

The Chinese Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council announced that new tariffs, reaching up to 15%, will be levied on select American products starting March 10th. These tariffs will target key agricultural exports, including chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton (facing a 15% tariff), and soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products (facing a 10% tariff). This move is particularly significant as China represented a substantial 17% of American agricultural exports in 2023, according to the US Department of Agriculture, potentially inflicting pain on American farmers.

Beyond the agricultural sector, Beijing has also taken measures targeting American firms, placing 25 companies under export and investment restrictions citing national security grounds. While refraining from targeting well-known household names, the restrictions seem to be aimed at companies, at least ten of them, involved in selling arms to Taiwan, the self-governed island claimed by Beijing. Adding another layer to the escalating tensions, China has also suspended imports of American lumber.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce a-----d the US of disregarding both facts and established international trade rules, characterizing the US actions as a prime example of “unilateralism and b------g.” This sentiment was echoed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, who declared that China has never succumbed to b------g or coercion. “Trying to exert extreme pressure on China is a miscalculation and a mistake,” he stated. He further emphasized China’s resolve, stating, “If the United States… persists in waging a tariff war, a trade war, or any other kind of war, the Chinese side will fight them to the bitter end.”

This latest exchange marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the US and China. The retaliatory tariffs levied by Beijing, coupled with the restrictions on American firms, signal a hardening of China’s stance. The vow to fight to the “bitter end” indicates a willingness to endure economic pain to defend its position. The implications of this escalating trade war are far-reaching, impacting not only the economies of the US and China but also the global economy, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers and disruption to international supply chains. The situation remains fluid, and the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether a path towards de-escalation can be found, or if the world is headed for a prolonged and damaging trade conflict.
