The Most Important Thing
Now, at 71% of the way thru my first century, it is clear there has always been only one thing of real importance – being happy with myself.
Inner happiness is peace – calm, clear awareness, sense of self-worth.
Happiness has been important because it has been mostly missing and has taken a long time to find the beginnings of. When something becomes important it’s because you want it, which means you don’t have it. Peace on Earth, for instance, has become important to us, because we don’t have it.
Those few of us who have happiness as a regular presence in their lives experience it as a given; it is just there, naturally, like your kitchen when you’re hungry – you just go there and eat. There is no struggling to find it, no worry that you will not be satisfied, no doubt that you deserve to be full-filled. Happiness is not the norm on Earth because we conclude a fundamental mistruth about ourselves very early on, which we continue to believe unquestioningly:
I’m not good enough the way I am; there’s something wrong with me.
Derivative of this would be:
I have to change, to fix myself, before I deserve anything.

This toxic belief has us convinced we do not deserve love. Love is what we really want when we stuff ourselves with simulacras like pizza, booze, ice cream, or screen tech. That mistruth makes us work to prove our worth and even to believe we have no right to be here – no right to exist. It is the “original sin” spell, a state of hypnosis so strong it’s hard to believe, and it is the source of our hidden shame, self-judgment, and our self-punishment in the forms of lack and war.
