Strong Assertions: But Is She Correct?
Back in January, Trump rolled out the America First Trade Policy, explicitly calling for an ERS as a dedicated arm to scoop up tariffs, duties, and all foreign-sourced revenues.
He put it bluntly: “I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources.”
It’s not replacing the IRS (that’s internal stuff like your paycheck withholdings); it’s a parallel beast focused outward, streamlining border grabs to make enforcement punchier and revenue flow smoother.
By mid-2025, projections show these tariffs (including the new hikes) adding $171 billion to federal coffers, or about 0.56% of GDP straight Treasury deposit, no detours.
So we should not be surprised at what comes of this. Because this is how we will be able to assist many families over the years who will be out of the workforce due to AI.
