Three Weeks to Washington

Iraq just put a date on it. Parliament is set to sit on July 5 to seat the last 9 cabinet ministers, and the prime minister flies to Washington in the middle of the month.

The Calendar Just Got A Date
For six months Iraq could not finish its own government. This week one of the coalition blocs confirmed a special session of parliament for July 5 to seat the last 9 ministers, with interior and defence among the open seats, before Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi flies to Washington at President Trump’s invitation.
al-Zaidi has ruled out the next e******n and ruled out forming a party. A premier with nothing left to run for, sprinting to hand Washington a clean, finished government. Washington named the price of that meeting out loud months ago: progress against c********n.
Baghdad Is Digging
So the books are being cleaned, in public, against a deadline. The c********n case against a detained deputy oil minister has now passed 98 billion dinars and 11 million dollars in seized cash, some of it pulled 4 metres out of the ground. Two convictions landed in a single week. In the same days, Washington widened sanctions on c*****t networks abroad. One capital scrubs its own books while the other reads out the names.

• Mid-July – al-Zaidi at the White House with crude commitments and a business delegation
• July 27 – the Iraq-Turkey pipeline treaty lapses unless renewed

• Over 90 percent – the share of state revenue that comes from a single barrel of oil
