The Long Weekend
By Reset Intelligence | @EXIT_FIAT
The $500 million cash shipment Washington blocked in April to pressure Baghdad has been released and delivered to the Central Bank of Iraq.
It landed in the same week 148 Iraqi lawmakers signed to drag parliament in on its day off, and the US Senate made its own recess negotiable.
The Plane
In April, Washington froze a shipment of nearly $500 million in US banknotes bound for Baghdad. The freeze was public pressure on the militia file, and it was the second halt since the war with Iran began. This week the Federal Reserve delivered $500 million in physical cash to the Central Bank of Iraq, confirmed through an official source by Iraq’s state news agency. A freeze is punishment. A release is a receipt. Somewhere between April and August, Baghdad met a condition.
The Day Off
Iraq’s parliament does not sit on a Friday, but 148 lawmakers have signed a petition for an extraordinary session on the salary crisis and the borrowing bill. The numbers forcing it:
• 7.8 trillion dinars – the Finance Ministry’s count of what the state owes every month to workers, retirees and welfare recipients
• 10 trillion dinars – the emergency borrowing law the government is pushing
• 45 days – the salary-spacing proposal now circulating
• 153,000 dinars per $100 – the street rate in Baghdad’s exchange shops this week, the widest gap from the official 1,300 in weeks
• Printing currency – named by a finance committee member as an option on the table
The Weekend
The US Senate is staying in the building past its scheduled recess for the CLARITY Act, the bill that writes digital-asset settlement into American law. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a joint defence pact in Jeddah on the Saudi weekend. And the Iran-Oman draft for the Strait of Hormuz proposes fees of up to 7% of cargo value while Washington holds at zero.
