IRAQ — THE FIRST DOMINO
Iraq’s parliament is submitting their federal budget this Saturday November 7, 2026 ahead of the November 15 deadline imposed by the IMF standby arrangement. The budget contains a redenomination provision for the Iraqi dinar. This has been in negotiation for 18 months. The holdup was never political disagreement inside Iraq’s Council of Representatives.
The holdup was coordination with the U.S. Treasury specifically with Under Secretary for International Affairs Brent McIntosh, who has been running parallel discussions with the Central Bank of Iraq since Q1 2026.
The Iraqi dinar redenomination is not an Iraqi event. It’s a controlled detonation in a sequence. Iraq’s currency restructure creates the first sovereign precedent for post-petrodollar valuation a nation pricing its currency against a diversified reserve basket rather than pure USD denomination.
Once Iraq moves, the economic cooperation framework signed with Saudi Arabia in March 2026 activates. Saudi Arabia has been waiting for Iraq to go first. The Saudi riyal has been quietly held at its peg for 14 months despite internal pressure to float.
THE TIMELINE — NEXT 60 DAYS
November 7 — Iraq submits budget. Redenomination provision enters public record. Markets should begin pricing dinar revaluation.
November 15 — IMF deadline. Iraq compliance confirmed. Petrodollar fracture sequence initiates I personally expect.
